Revolutionizing Illumination: The Reverse Pickup Table Lamp

ADD Architectural Studio's Innovative Design Wins Prestigious A' Design Award

ADD Architectural Studio, led by Chronopoulos Argyris and Koutsioumaris Dionysios, drew inspiration from the transmission of sound as a vinyl rotates on a classic pickup. The vinyl was replaced by a translucent marble discus, creating a unique table lamp. The design is completed with bronze arcs, which, in combination with the discus's final position, depict the archetype of the Pickup needle placed upon a vinyl.

The uniqueness of the Reverse Pickup Table Lamp lies in its elegant discus made of translucent marble. As the discus rotates along the base, it gradually lights up, creating a play between light and shadow. The lamp comes with three different discuses, each made from a different colored marble, allowing users to match their aesthetics and mood. As the mood changes, all one needs to do is "play" their favorite discus.

The lamp's realization is as innovative as its design. The discus consists of two pieces of translucent marble, each 3 mm thick, held apart by a circular wreath featuring a cross-section similar to a bike rim. A LED tape is glued upon the internal surface of the wreath, powered through the wreath's contact with a bronze guide spanning the base length, ensuring the rotation course of the discus. The bronze arcs are welded onto the rectangular bronze base.

The design project began in Athens in January 2017 and was completed as a concept design in early May 2017. The design team's architectural background and influences from architects such as Mies Van der Rohe, Tadao Ando, and Rem Koolhaas are evident in the lamp's elegant and slim design. The challenge was to create a timeless piece of furniture using precious materials while incorporating a post-modern and pop concept.

The Reverse Pickup Table Lamp is a testament to ADD Architectural Studio's commitment to innovative design and technology. The lamp is not just a piece of furniture, but an interactive experience, allowing users to control the illumination by rotating the discus. This design, which merges art, architecture, and technology, is a deserving winner of the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award.
